2018 SIHH Watch Fair. While many copy men watch brands continued to follow last year’s trend of launching more affordable watches, Richard Mille presented another extreme watch with a value of nearly a million euros. If last year was a collaboration with McLaren, this year it’s the Polo watch. The new RM 53-01 was released in collaboration with one of the world’s best polo players, Pablo MacDonagh. Polo is a very elegant sport, but difficult and physically demanding. During his career, Pablo suffered a lot of injuries, including broken bones. Realizing that ordinary glass could not withstand a sledgehammer, Richard Mille’s team worked with the Sapphire House of Stettler to develop a method of making laminated glass based on a technique used in the automotive industry. The result is a composite glass made of two sapphire crystals with a polyethylene film in between that won’t break, just crackle, even if hit directly with a golf club. To this end, the RM team developed an unusual two-plate design. One of them, called the peripheral plate, is fixed to the case and has a tensioning system. The second (central) turntable is connected to the peripherals via cables. It contains all the wheels and winding modules of the movement.

The central board is suspended by two 0.27 mm thick braided steel cables. Cables connected to four tensioners are threaded through 10 rollers, creating a three-dimensional structure. The cable system provides a constant tension, keeping the entire structure in balance. The suspended construction and the use of grade 5 titanium in the shaft and double chainrings ensure the robustness of the mechanism, the transmission works flawlessly and is very resistant to shocks and shocks.

The body of the RM 53-01 is made of TPT graphic carbon, which is unalterable and known for its high resistance to damage and microcracks. It is also much lighter than other materials.
