JACOB & CO. presents the BUGATTI CHIRON blue sapphire crystal
Since 1986, Jacob & Co. has created some of the most incredible timepieces. The latest update comes in the form of the Jacob & Co. Bugatti Chiron Blue Sapphire Crystal, a timepiece partnered with the luxury automaker.
Bugatti is known for creating some of the most iconic supercars, from the Veyron to the Chiron and Divo. The car brand’s collaborations with watchmaker Jacob & Co. have produced equally incredible designs, with the latest partnership being the Bugatti Chiron Blue Sapphire Crystal.
The idea behind this timepiece is to replicate a miniature version of the famous W16 engine (a combination of two V8 engines) in a high-end timepiece. Every part of the Bugatti Chiron’s blue sapphire crystal has been developed for nearly a year, demonstrating the Chiron’s prowess. The 55mm x 44.4mm x 21.5mm case draws inspiration from the Chiron’s sleek lines, with the movement powering the chronograph and the famous Bugatti engine housed inside sapphire crystal that can be opened for viewing.
When the wearer presses the right crown, the engine starts. Once the crankshaft turns, it pushes all 16 pistons up and down. For the first time a watch features a 30º inclined flying tourbillon at 12 o’clock, while the movement is suspended in four positions, looking like a Chiron’s suspension setup – the movement essentially floats inside the case and the wearer can see it going up and down move. The challenge for the designers was not only to create a special supercar-style lateral system, but also to patent it so that the crown would not be damaged by the movement moving up and down.
Powering the engine, as well as the chronograph functions, is the JCAM37 hand-wound movement, visible through the transparent sapphire caseback of the Bugatti Chiron blue sapphire crystal. Featuring 578 hand-decorated and hand-assembled parts, the movement includes two separate barrels and ratchets: one for the motor and one for the chronograph. Although the animation and chronograph power reserves are separate, both are connected by the winding crown – clockwise for the movement, counterclockwise for the engine animation. Jacob & Co made a case out of blue sapphire crystal, a rather difficult material to work, and incorporated it into the timepiece. The case and caseback are made from a single piece of sapphire crystal; the watch is water resistant to 30 meters. The crown and pushers are made of titanium and sapphire. The bottom of the case is decorated with three crowns bearing the EB logo – the initials of the founder, Ettore Bugatti. The left crown sets the time, the middle crown is used for the movement and animation, and pressing the right crown starts the engine animation. In 2019, Bugatti and Jacob & Co. signed a multi-year partnership to create unique timepieces never seen before. On the occasion of Bugatti’s 110th anniversary in 2019, Jacob & Co created the Epic X Chrono Bugatti (model EC333.29.AA.AA.A), followed in 2020 by the Twin Turbo Furious (model TT200.21.AB.AB .A) Bugatti Chiron Tourbillon (Ref.
