Breitling Avenger Hurricane 45 Now Available in More Fit Sizes
Breitling has opted to downsize one of its largest models, and we wish we could say this is more common among brands. The Breitling Avenger Hurricane started out as a massive, door frame-attacking 50mm case that became even more durable thanks to Breitling’s proprietary carbon case material, which they call “Breitlight.” The new Breitling Avenger Hurricane 45 adopts a more approachable 45mm diameter and addresses one of the Hurricane’s other quirks by adopting a more standard 12-hour dial and movement, rather than some of the original models’ 24-hour “military time” dials.
Breitling’s new Avenger Hurricane 45 is essentially an Avenger Hurricane for the masses, or at least those who can build a 45mm, tactical, statement watch that’s still very manly. Aside from the almost reasonable size of the new version, the Breitling Avenger Hurricane 45 has a lot in common with its larger predecessor, the Breitling Avenger Hurricane 12H, including the Breitling-made B01 movement, anti-reflective (both sides) sapphire crystal, screw-in Crown, screw-down caseback and rubber-backed fabric strap. The ultra-masculine military-style dial with stenciled numerals, available in black and yellow, remains stylistically unchanged compared to its 50mm predecessor, save for a downsizing to fit a smaller case.
Worthy of special mention is the B01 movement included in the Avengers Hurricane 45. This 47-jewel, 70-hour power reserve chronograph movement is entirely produced by Breitling and features registers running seconds, 30 minutes and 12 hours. Beating at a standard frequency of 28,800 vibrations per hour (4Hz), the inclusion of a manufacturing movement has given the Breitling Avenger Hurricane 45 some points among enthusiasts and reflects a move towards more models equipped with a manufacturing movement.
This is actually an intriguing move by cheap Breitling, who often insists on making wrist-sensitive watches without thinking. A 45mm Breitling Avenger Hurricane watch with a case made from Breitling’s lightweight Breitlight material, which can be a very comfortable setup if your wrist can pull it off, especially considering it comes with a well-executed rubber-backed textile strap. Further making the new version easier to use is the decision to stick with the twelve-hour dial, which is easier to see at a glance for most people. Breitling fans now have more options, and it’s not hard to imagine that many people who like the 50mm Avengers Hurricane simply can’t wear it because of its size.
If you want to experience the “real” Avengers Hurricane experience in a 50mm case and wear a 24-hour dial while pumping iron in front of your vintage Arnold Schwarzenegger poster (hands on here), you can still own it.
